Summary:

Herbalife is clearly a major player in world of multi-level marketing, but we’re a bit confused why people are so enamored with this shake. For starters, it’s made with soy. That’s a red flag in our opinion because of the various controversial negative health effects that are associated with soy. Read our page about soy dangers for more information on this matter.

After we got past the fact that the first ingredient is isolated soy protein, we saw that the second ingredient is fructose – not a good foundation.  Natural fructose from fruits and vegetables is one thing but fructose in food products, powders and shakes is very different.  When too much fructose enters the liver, the liver can’t process it all fast enough for the body to use as sugar. Instead, it starts making fats from the fructose and sending them off into the bloodstream as triglycerides (which can actually cause weight gain).

Our next challenge was the low amount of protein per serving – only 9 grams per serving. This is much lower than many other shakes we’ve reviewed. Furthermore, the sugar content in the Herbalife shake is higher than usual (9 grams per serving) and the sodium is high (145 mg per serving).

What we did like was that this formula was Allergen free, which is hard to come by in a shake. Another good thing about this shake is it’s been around for a long time and there seem to be a lot of happy customers behind this business. If you’ve tried Herbalife please let us know! The more opinions from our fans, the better our reviews!

I have been using HerbaLife for over two years and I feel much better and have more energy than I had fifteen years ago. Every time I go to the doctors office for my check up the doctor is amazied at my levels and that I’m only taking one prescrption. I didn’t feel this way prior to HerbaLife.

This product is so over-hyped because of the MLM marketing scheme. You can get products 10 times better for the money without the SOY fillers when you are not pay a army of MLM people. You have to sell crap with fillers to have the profit to pay all those affiliates. You MLMers drink junk and don’t even know it.

I can’t believe there is soy in Herbalife products. What idiots would make a health product with soy and have it made in China.

Soy Is like ever thing even oxygen can kill you if you breath to much of it some is good for you and to much bad for you. Herbalife is like ever thing in the world You have to balances it with ever thing in you life. I have heard more good thing about Herbalife then bad. And for over 30 years a lout of people have used it and have felt better for it.

At the end of the day nutritional fact is fact. Products high in soy for men and women that may have cancers that run in the family are not good. Soy based products are proven to slightly generate and increase in estrogen levels through the plant hormone Phytoestrogens.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytoestrogens
If if you have no underlining health issues you should be fine to use this as a supplement but not as a meal replacement. The nutritional value of the product is very low especially where it counts in the protein count. Also the bio-availability of soy protein slightly low efficiency ratio compared to other forms such as Whey. I would not waste my money on it. Eating health and real whole foods with rich nutritional values is the best choice to being healthier and increasing energy.

The Herbalife Shakes are okay. I use the the allergen free one as I am gluten, dairy and soy free. However, they only have one flavor and that gets boring quickly.

Margi, I also use the Allergen free shake. Something I’ve tried is instead of having my tea concentrate alongside in it’s own glass of water, is to add that concentrated portion(1/2 tsp) to the shake for a variation. I also add fruits, so you’re not truly limited.

I have been taking Herbalife for 4 months and feel amazing on it. I have lost 40 pounds and 16 inches of my whole body. I have a 5 year old and a 5 month old and I finally have the energy to keep up with the two of them, which I never had that before. This product works wonders. I even tried a program that I was paying $310 a month for called Isagenix and never got results even close to Herbalife. there are also some awesome recipes you can add to the vanilla allergen free formula shake. I actually add an extra scoop of the personalized protien to each shake then on days that I want something different. I use 8 oz of a low cal/low cholesterol Orange Juice and it tastes like a orange creamsickle.

To answer your questions about sugar:
I emailed Dr. Luigi to ask about our HERBALIFE Healthy Meal shake using fructose in the ingredients. Here is his response:
You bring up a good point on sugar. The world is starting to realize that we consume way too much sugar in our daily diets, as well as fats and calories overall. The main reason for using sugar is for taste. Almost all of your customers want something that tastes good, so sugar helps to sweeten the product. 32 years ago, when Mark Hughes designed the products, he did not add much sugar because he wanted to keep the products protein based with plant nutrients, and he started the company using fructose as a sweetener. That legacy has continued in almost all of our product line, in particular our shakes.

Fructose is basically fruit sugar. The sugar that you find in a candy bar is glucose or sucrose. The good thing about fructose is that is does NOT go directly into the bloodstream after you eat it (like glucose and sucrose do). Instead, fructose takes a stop in the liver to get metabolized which slows down its release into the blood. This is why Mark was so smart to use fructose because it generally has a Low glycemic index compared to other sugars. Because our shakes have protein and fiber, they help to slow the release of the fructose which is why people feel satisfied with energy for 2-3 hours. Also, the amount of fructose is between 9-12 grams depending on which shake you use.

Some of the new shakes may have only 6 grams of sugar. Each gram of sugar has 4 calories so a shake with 12 grams of sugar is only 48 calories which is very little when you consider a typical soda has 200 calories of sugar. Furthermore, our sugar comes from oranges or beets which is a more natural source than corn sweetener (which is what the food companies generally use). So yes, many customers are asking for low sugar products which is exactly what we offer. I remember when I started in the company years ago, Deb Katz told me that Mom’s generally look for products that have less than 13 grams of sugar per serving on the shelf in stores. And that is about the amount in our products. Best regards, Luigi”

While I am a bit impressed with your explaination, I became the Distributor of your company solely to order Herbalife Products for me and my so I can shed my weight which was around 260Lbs on Nov.1 2012. I have been taking this shake along with sensible diet and all the prescribed tablets (Ultimate Package) my weight is hovering in between 252-255 Lbs after consuming the shake (mostly twice a day) for around 75 days now. What should I do.? Kindly reply me at : [email protected]

      • Walter Paiz says:

Hi Everyone: Regarding the questions that Niranjan Bhatia had regarding not being able to lose the weight. First and foremost you have to start with how much water you are taking in per day. Simple just divide your weight by half and the total will be your ounces that you will need of water per day, minimum. This will not include the water that you intake during workouts, that doesn’t count as it is water that you are replacing. Next you need to see what your calorie intake is daily. If you are at 1200 calories or below you are in a danger zone. You are in starvation mode. Meaning that your body is consuming more calories per day at rest than what you are taking in. At rest means that you are laying in bed for 24 hours, which no one does but it gives you an idea of what how low you are in your calories. When you are so low on calories you become like a camel, everything that you put into your body it will hold for a rainy day since you are starving it at that moment, same goes for water. Hope this helps and if you or anyone has any nutrition/fitness question please feel free to send me an email. Thanks. Happy Mothers day to all of the Mom out there.

Being over 200 lbs. you should be doing 4 to 5 shakes a day to lose.

I have been using herbalife for about a year. I feel healthier, not only that my sugar levels and cholesterol have gone down, and i also got off antidepressants and anxiet meds. remember, stuff affects people differently. I didnt get enough protein,(you can only eat so much chicken and turkey especialy when you are alergic to fish) so I will gladly take the protein from soy!

  • Sue says:

Why in the world would you buy a protein shake with only 9 grams of protein, 9 grams of sugar, high sodium, etc when you can buy a better quality product for less. The only thing they’ve got right is to fool people into their MLM.

    • Lynn says:

I don’t know if you have ever tried Herbalife, but I have used it for almost a year as well as my husband. We love the Cookies and Cream mixed with the Mint Chocolate Chip – so yummy. Yes, the shake powder has 9 grams of protein, but you mix it with skim milk that has 9 grams of protein, so you are actually consuming 18 grams of protein in each meal. Never been healthier, and love the vitamins and Herbal tea.

    • Veronica says:

You actually dont have to just drink the shake, I add a whole scoop of personalized protein powder to both of my shakes adding 10 grams of extra protein to each shake I consume. I drink two shakes a day with 20 extra grams of protein, which helps to maximize weight loss. As of today, I have lost 40 pounds in 4 months and 16 inches off my whole body. It’s obviously working wonders…

  • Sue says:

Sorry my last comment was about Herbalife and I’d give them zero stars if I could.

I love their shake, and several of the other supplements, in fact this is the first time I literally lost weight and kept it off for years!!! It’s no hype on my part, it taste good and I’m not hungry. My energy has increased and I have lost 25 lbs. in 3 months, while eating out, and eating things I like. I tried so many other things and this is the first one that I can honestly say I could do this for the rest of my like. My favorite in chocolate.

Herbalife’s products are fair at best. I was married to a distributor and at the time, she had been indoctrinated for about 6 years w/ the MLM nonsense. The “biz” side is a pyramid scam, pure & simple. She got suckered into quitting her FT job to go 100% into the “biz.” It failed and we went bankrupt and ulitmately got divorced (I, meanwhile, worked FT and picked up freelance work & took out loans to keep us afloat). Today, she’s crazier than ever with ith. I’d give HL a negative rating if I could (oh, I just did!).

Herbalife changed my life for the best. Before starting Herbalife, I had very little energy. Now everything is firing on all cylinders, if you know what I mean. I used to take the dog for a long walk and now I take the dog for a long run. I now have the energy and stamina to run for miles. Herbalife has some awesome products and I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to be healthier. My kids used to crave ice cream and now the drink healthy shakes.

I love Herbalife. I have never felt better in my whole life. It is not a hype and as far as store brands that offer more protein contain other harmful ingredients. Herbalife’s program is designed to be personalized so you can add more protein depending on the individual. They not only have shakes their other nutritional supplements are amazing and I am hooked on their Herbal Tea! As far as I am concered Herbalife is an A+ company and product. 🙂

  • Lily says:

I have a question I just started the Herbalife weight lost. How long before I see weight lost? I need to loose around 11 pounds. I am taking the protein shake , the tea,and the healthy meal powder. Is there anything else I should be taking ? I would like to take it after I have lost the weight also. I do want something for energy I just get a bit nervous of getting the shakes, can someone tell me what to take or do I continue taking just what I am taking now? Than you!!!!!!

Hi guys For starters that I love Herbalife. Also yes i agree there is soy fillers. but to let you now that their is a lot of people out their that are lactose intellorent and they can only drink soy milk. Plus soy milk is better for you and that does not tear up your stomach!! I give herbalife a thumbs up and a 5 star rating. another this for those of you who loves the critics. dont believe them until you really try the product and the place of the critics because the critics are only stating what they do and donts on the products and the places that they go to!!

I used Herbalife and exercise to lose 110lbs in 11 mo. I believe in the product, it works and tastes good. That’s for the Herbalife rating. Now for the bad news.Herbalife is a pyramid scheme and if you ever hear about Online Business Systems as a way to grow your Herbalife business……run….do not walk away! SCAM! Demand you buy into their system at the “Supervisor” position so you’ll make more money. So now the recruiter has just sold $2000.00 of product you have no control over what products you receive. Then they set you up with buying leads. I got in over $7K in just a few months. Never recruited anyone. Sold a little product to neighbors and family. Reported these tactics to Herbalife International. Results? Herbalife has shut the OBS down. They can’t use leads selling their websites or any of their marketing materials. There is a class-action going on right now. I accidentlly found out while using the search term Tang Kuie. Results showed”Is Herbalife a pyramid scheme. I clicked on that link and Voile’….. court filing documents alleging the pyramid scheme. If you are interested enought to take the time to read through it, it will open your eyes. I would do some serious in-depth research before make the decision to become an Hebalife distributor….good luck!!!

I was once a HerbaLife Distributor and i do believe it is a scam on the part of investing in the business cause i am almost $1000 in credit card debt because i bought into the whole idea of being a ‘supervisor’. You have to go above and beyond to get a few customers who rightfully say that the products are too pricy for their budget. The shakes do taste great and they help with weight loss/weight gain/weight mantainence but dont invest, PLEASE. Lesson HARSHLY and PAINFULLY learnt.

Herblife is very healthy vs someone you eats like sh*t. If won’t get real results, don’t take it. It’s a low grade & over priced product. Don’t waste your time & money on it unless you want to pay for support. This is sadly why people call it a cult.

I have been using Herbalife for over 6 years… Started initially to make money with the business… as I attempted to give up on that, I noticed the difference I FELT when I stopped drinking the shakes. I went from a size 14 to a size 4…I am now 55 pounds lighter and much healthier by replacing a meal a day… I think a lot of you have hit the nail on the head… it’s about balance and finding what works for you…

I want to know if anyone has experienced increased gas after drinking the shake. I use 2 scoops of the HL meal with 1 scoop of the protein. Any suggestions I do like the shakes and wish to continue but the gastro effects are unbelievable.

SIMPLE … PYRAMID SCHEME – SCAM – DISTRIBUTORS ARE BRAINWASHED LIKE MARY KAY LADIES LOL … seriously there are better products out there … juice your own products and add flax and chia seeds. Better whole proteins and no fake sugars. Save yourself the money. There are better alternatives … and yes, now comes all of the Herbal life zombies to tell me how wrong I am LOL go for it

I agree. Be careful with the shakes they contain sucralose. It’s splenda. If you research it the side effects can make you sick. I was getting headaches, anxiety, I wasn’t feeling well. I finally looked up the ingredients and there was sucralose. I got seizures from this. It may not effect you now put down the road it can. Diet soda did it to me back in the late 80’s. After years of drinking it, my body finally couldn’t handle it anymore. It’s like smoking, it effects you down the road not in the beginning.

I also have been using the shakes for about 6 years now. I lost the weight I wanted within the first 4 months. I usually just have my daily shake for breakfast & I’ve managed to stay my natural healthy weight. I also haven’t suffered any illnesses. I had slight sniffles for one day once. i believe that was more from a chemical irritant as I had used a harsh chemical for cleaning something the day before.I’ve been perfectly fit and healthy ever since I started using Herbalife products. I LOVE HERBALIFE! I’ll believe in the dangers of soy when it’s been proven! Not just gossiped about.
    Sincerely,
    To ur health!

    Hi Gabriel,
your request is common and we do not see any issues adding another protein powder to make up for the lack of protein in another shake.
